THE FIREWORKS FOR APOSTLE SANTIAGO

Santiago de Compostela (Spain) / The luminous, sound and visual performance in honour of the Apostle of Santiago has fascinated thousands of people at the Plaza del Obradoiro, the finishing line of every pilgrim, to show the birth of the Jacobean tradition with a cinematic vision full of colours and effects in three dimensions.

The story, which has opened the day of July 25, Day of Galicia, has been divided into four times, with live music by the folk group Cantigas e Agarimos, and has ended with a sequence of ten minutes of fireworks, composed by 366 kilos of gunpowder and 6,000 shooting effects.

During the 30 minutes of the projection on the Pazo de Raxoi, a narrative journey has been made with no voice-over that has begun in the transfer of the remains of the Apostle from Palestine to Galicia.

The 3D images of a small boat on the stone screen have shown how sailors carry with them the mortal remains of the holy figure and go through a storm that almost causes a shipwreck.

Then, it has been reflected how a hermit distinguishes luminaries among the green of the Lebredón forest and thus finds the old tomb.

The story has continued with the emergence of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), created from the stars and which ends in the cathedral.

The 50,000 watts of sound have shaken the floor of the Plaza del Obradoiro with the arrival of troops from Almanzor to the city, followed by the burning of the pre-Romanesque church.

The unique assembly, which has been run by the company Acciona Producciones y Diseño, has also told the emergence of some of the emblematic monuments of the city located at the Plaza del Obradoiro itself, such as the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos or the pazo (country house) of San Xerome.

Finally, the story has led to the “Party”, at which time members of the folk group were appearing in six windows of the current headquarters of the City Council before starting the colourful fireworks show.

“The truth is that it’s worth coming to see it,” a woman told EFE once the exhibition was over.

Like her, hundreds of people got on a train or a car with friends and family and in the morning to get closer to the Galician capital and enjoy the show live at the Plaza del Obradoiro.

“We’ve been sitting here all afternoon because we wanted to make sure we saw it live,” another tourist told EFE, adding that “people never stopped coming.”

However, not all those who have approached Santiago have been able to enjoy the projection due to the limited space and, unlike in previous years, this time will not be projected for economic reasons, although the fireworks will be launched again on the 31st. (July 25, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
