THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT FACES TWO VOTES OF NO CONFIDENCE DUE TO THE BENALLA CASE

Paris/ The government of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, faces today Tueday two votes of no confidence presented by the centre right and the left in the National Assembly as a result of their management of “case Benalla”, which has caused the greatest political crisis in five years.

The votes of no confidence have remote possibilities of prospering because they need the approval of 268 of the 577 members of parliament and Macron’s party, La República en Marcha, has a large majority in the lower chamber.

Its debate and voting will force the Government to give new explanations about a scandal unleashed after the newspaper “Le Monde” revealed that a former security chief of Macron, Alexandre Benalla, beat protesters posing as police during the protests on May 1.

For Macron and his surroundings, the excesses of their old man of trust were “an individual event” that should be treated as such, while the opposition insists on considering it a “state matter” because of the alleged efforts of the Elysée Palace to hide it.

The conservative party, the Republicans, which with 103 members of Parliament is the main opposition force, justifies its vote of no conficence saying that the Government “has failed” in the management of the crisis.

Along the same lines and also with little chance of getting ahead, given its 63 seats, the one of the three parliamentary groups of the French left was launched: the Socialists, the Alternative left and the Communists.

Although the secretary of the Socialists, Olivier Faure, already emphasized today that his party will not support the motion of the conservatives not to give the feeling that they are trying to replace the Executive with a joint alternative majority. (July 31, 2018, EFE/PracticaEspañol)
