THE HOUSE IMMORTALIZED BY PHOTOGRAPHER ROBERT CAPA

Madrid / The City Council of Madrid has denied the license to demolish the worker’s house that was immortalized by Robert Capa during the Civil War, given the application submitted does not meet the documentation requirements necessary to start the administrative file.

The Municipal Board of Puente de Vallecas has denied the request for demolition, which last Friday announced the owner of the property of Peironcely 10 street, Luis Santiago Barrena Iturbe.

The same sources remember that the municipal plenary on last July 5 approved by majority a proposal by PSOE-M to include this property in the Catalog of Protected Elements and preserve it as part of the historical heritage of the city.

This proposal also called for improving the habitability of the property.

Both actions are “currently under study,” indicate from the Consistory of Madrid.

Peironcely 10, house built in 1927 and immortalized by the Hungarian photographer in 1939, has been immortalized in the collective imagination with shrapnel marks on its front and children playing between the devastation of the war.

Built with bricks for its durability and hardness, today it houses infraviviendas in which reside 21 adults and 13 children.

These families, who pay between 350 and 400 euros for floors between 17 and 30 square meters, were informed at the beginning of October that the rent would not be renewed because the house would be partially demolished later this month, according to reports in a statement the platform Salva Peironcely 10.

Besides, this group alleged that the owner had covered shrapnel marks with plaster.

Madrid was during the Civil War (1936-1939) the first capital where the population was bombed continuously, with attacks aimed at large masses of working population residing in Tetuán and Vallecas, districts now integrated in the city and then outlying towns.

The Salva Peironcely 10 platform began a campaign to try to protect this housing in the Entrevías neighborhood after an investigation by photographer José Latova and Alberto Martín Escudero found out in 2010 that the property photographed by Endre Erno Friedmann was still standing, with a similar appearance to that time.

The General Directorate of Patrimony of the Community of Madrid rejected instead to classify the house as Property of Patrimonial Interest for being an “sub-standard housing”, since it is a house parceled in apartments of few square meters in which the tenants live in very precarious conditions.

In addition, it noted that Capa’s photograph was “made with extras taken to a place of the city in those moments militarized, without civil population”. (October 17, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
