Madrid / The journalist Gabriela Cañas will be the new president of the EFE Agency replacing Fernando Garea, the Secretary of State for Communication reported Monday.
Cañas, born in Cuenca and 63 years old, will be the first woman in charge of the state-owned news agency. Journalist and writer, her professional career has been mainly linked to the newspaper El País and before being proposed by the Government to direct EFE she was the deputy director of the UAM-El País School of Journalism.
“The consolidation and modernization of EFE to continue being a national and international reference agency will be one of the priorities of the future president, who will assume the position after completing the usual procedure,” said the Government.
The journalist, licensed by the Complutense University of Madrid, has been a correspondent in Brussels and Madrid and head of the Madrid and Society sections. In addition, between 2006 and 2008 she was general director of International Information at the Secretariat of State for Communication.
Fernando Garea, at the head of EFE since July 2018, announced this morning in a letter to the workers that the President of the Government had determined his dismissal, a decision transmitted by the Secretary of State for Communication, Miguel Ángel Oliver, last Saturday .
In his farewell letter he thanked EFE workers for the lesson that “a public news agency is not a government news agency, not even an official agency” and has influenced that, as stated in the Statute of Drafting, “EFE is owned by society as a whole.”
The journalist, who has directed the agency for 19 months, recalled that all political parties committed themselves to promoting the parliamentary election of the presidents of EFE and insisted that “that degovernmentalization is essential.”
And in his farewell to the workers he has recovered the commitment he assumed before the Congress of Deputies: “If at the end of my term someone feels upset, I would like it before the power who is upset with my management than the opposition. I think that is the essence of a public medium. ” (February 17, 2020, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
