The eldest sister of the King of Thailand, Ubolratana Mahidol, ended her brief candidacy to become prime minister, after being publicly discredited last night by the monarch himself.
The party Thai Raksa Chart, which Ubolratana was running for, announced on Saturday that it “submits to the Royal order”, issued on Friday night by King Vajiralongkorn, with “loyalty” and “respect for all the members of the Royal House “and therefore withdraws the candidacy of the princess.
“The Thai Raksa Chart will fulfill its duty in accordance with the regulations of the Electoral Commission, the electoral law and the Constitution with respect to the tradition related to the monarchy,” settled the party.
ROYALTY AND POLITICS
The monarch, also known as Rama X, described last night as “inappropriate” and “against the constitutional system” the aspiration of his sister facing the elections of March 24, the first since the coup d’état in 2014.
“The participation of a high-ranking member of the royal family in politics, in any form, is an act that conflicts with the traditions, customs and culture of the country and, therefore, is considered highly inappropriate,” reprimanded the king.
The words by the king of Thailand, considered by his subjects as an almost divine being and that can not be questioned, supposed de facto the end of the journey of the neophyte in politics.
PRINCESS WITHOUT TITLE
The unexpected candidacy of Ubolratana was for hours an earthquake on the political board of the country, as the princess was linked to a platform related to former prime minister fugitive from justice Thaksin Shinawatra, seen as an enemy by monarchists and the Army.
Although Ubolratana was removed from the Royal Household and lost her title in 1972 when she married an American – from whom she divorced in 1998 – in practice she enjoys all the recognitions of her lineage as the first-born daughter of the late King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit.
In a message published this morning on the social network Instagram before announcing the end of her candidacy, Ubolratana thanked as a farewell “the support” of his followers.
The party Thai Raksa Chart, on the other hand, canceled all its campaign actions for Saturday, while a party close to the military pressured the electoral Commission for the group to be dissolved.
Thailand is going through a deep political crisis that has kept it for more than a decade in a loop where there are anti-government protests, dictatorial periods led by the army and democratic lapses. (February 10, 2019, EFE/ Practica Español)
