“The Lion King”, the highest box office success musical of all time with 100 million viewers, reaches its ninth season at La Gran Vía in Madrid

Madrid / Ten million euros of investment and the remodeling of a theater have become five million spectators since 2011 and more than 3,500 performances without symptoms of exhaustion: the musical “The Lion King” turns eight today in Madrid’s Gran Vía breaking all kinds of records.

The box office success musical of all time, with more than 100 million viewers worldwide, has incorporated the Mexican Fela Domínguez (1989) to the cast of her ninth season at the Lope de Vega Theater, for the role of Nala, and the South African Lindiwe Mkhize (1976), for Rafiki’s.

They are “delighted” to share a production “so well done, so precise and with so many values” with interpreters from 12 other countries, including Spain, Argentina, Angola, South Africa, Brazil and Cuba, both explain in an interview with EFE.

The transition from childhood to maturity

“The Lion King” is a parable set in the African savanna about the passage from childhood to maturity that jumped from the Disney factory to the Broadway stages in 1997, three years after being released in the cinema, which, precisely, it has returned this year.

Mkhize and Dominguez think that the worldwide success of the musical and that it is the only one that has been eight complete, uninterrupted seasons, at the Gran Vía, is that it is “a universal story”, which speaks of “love, friendship and inclusion but also of betrayal or the ability to change things.”

All this helped by an “exceptional” music and articulated dolls “that make their own magic”, says the Mexican, who was the protagonist in Spain of the musical “The bodyguard” in 2017.

Dominguez had played in 2015 in Mexico “The Lion King” and has put the voice to the character of Nala in the Spanish-dubbed version of the new Disney movie.

For Mkhize, who has played for more than a decade the role of Rafiki (wise woman) in the production of this musical in the West End of London, the Spanish version “is warmer” and although she doesn’t speak the language, she assures that listening “It takes you to another level.”

Effort and maximum concentration

They do 8 functions a week and that means “a lot” of work and discipline, a “tremendous” effort because everything has to work perfectly with maximum concentration: “I was distracted for a second in Mexico, I stepped on the foot of a Hyena and I got injured”, Domínguez recalls.

Before going on stage, Mkhize reveals, pray to God to ask for “the best possible show”, as well as Dominguez, who, “invariably”, in the absence of two minutes to act, enters the scenic panic and the desire to run away

“In love” with the city of Madrid

The two are “in love” with the city and Dominguez highlights Madrid Central – “how good it breathes now,” she says – and, above all, the sunsets at the Temple of Debod: “I start to cry; I have not seen anything like it. ”

“What I like most is the weather, although in August – when they joined the production – it is very hot. People are also very special. It is a city full of restaurants and we love anchovies! ”, says the South African, mother of three children, who live in her country and in London.

“They are very proud of what their mother does. It is a great thing for them. They tell them at school and they are happy and that in turn makes me very proud of them”,she adds.

The Spanish version, the seventh language to which the work was translated, belongs to what is known on Broadway as “the club of the million”, that is to say the shows that in one week raise a million dollars, which they have already surpassed in several occasions.
