Venice (Italy) / The international jury of the 58th edition of the Venice Art Biennial has awarded the Lithuanian pavilion “Sun & Sea” with the Golden Lion for the best national pavilion, by Lina Lapelyte, Vaiva Grainyte and Rugile Barzdziukaite.
“May you live in interesting times”, the phrase that Robert F. Kennedy pronounced in his trip to South Africa in 1966, is also the statement under which the Biennial is celebrated until November, in its 58th edition.
The Biennial reflects on the problems currently facing humanity in the world and is chaired by Paolo Baratta and curated by Ralph Rugoff, current director of the Hayward Gallery in London.

Arthur Jafa, Golden Lion for the best artist
The American Arthur Jafa has been awarded the Golden Lion to the best of the 79 artists participating in the central exhibition and the Silver Lion has been taken by the young Cypriot artist Haris Epaminonda.
Special mention to national participation has taken Belgium. Belgium had “Mondo Cane”, by the hand of Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys. Within the central sample, the Mexican Teresa Margolles and the Nigerian Otobong Nkanga have been awarded.
Teresa Margolles has brought a large concrete wall to the city of canals, with concertinas at the top, to provoke people and to ask about divisions and violence in the world.
The American Jimmie Durham has been honored with the Golden Lion to his professional career.
Spain shows a pavilion of Basque artists Itziar Okariz and Sergio Prego, curated by Peio Aguirre, which presents an empty space, “perforated” by sound, image, sculpture and architecture.
With a project based on the painting “The Return of the Prodigal Son“, Russia and The Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg is the first institution that organizes an exhibition at the Venice Art Biennial. The famous painting by Rembrandt is one of the great works of this museum. (May 13, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
