The Lope de Vega´s letters at his patron

The National Library of Spain (BNE) has acquired for 400,000 euros a correspondence of 117 letters writters by the playwright Lope de Vega to his patron the Duke of Sessa, 96 of them in his own hand, whose contents now can already be consulted in the Hispanic Digital Library.

The letters have been purchased in good condition to the family of Bustos and Pardo Manuel de Villena, are dated between 1610 and 1614, sewn in a volume that lacks binding, do not have a chronological order but are listed and missing the number 83 and the number 88.

On the cover page of the correspondence is alluded to the pseudonym or alter ego used by Lope in some of his works, as in the comedy “Belardo furioso”, and you can read: “Letters and (tickets) from Belardo to Lucilo on different matters “.

According to the expert in the correspondence of Lope de Vega, Carlos Peña, the playwright and the Duke of Sessa met in the summer of 1605 and established a friendship that soon turned him into his “secretary of love”, to which he “lent” his voice. In 1611, the Duke of Sessa began to collect works by Lope and in 1618 he bound more than 600.

Through these letters you can know or delve into the “ideas and values” of Lope de Vega, his psychology, his life in the privacy of the home or his whims, his vices and his enormous celopathy.

Also, his reaction to events such as the death of Margaret of Austria, Henry IV of England, his own assassination attempt in 1614, or his ordination as a priest.

To the file of the House of Sessa belonged between eight and nine volumes of letters of Lope and this epistolario can be one of them. Two others are located in the museum Lázaro Galdiano (volume 2) and the Royal Spanish Academy (volume 4).

Until today, the National Library that conserves “almost half of the works” of Lope de Vega, only counted on a letter of the dramatist.

“Lope de Vega is in fashion”, said the Chairman of the Board, Luis Alberto de Cuenca, to underline the importance of the new acquisition of this public institution. (January 23, 2018, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
