THE MAYA CODEX OF MEXICO IS CONFIRMED AS THE OLDEST MANUSCRIPT IN AMERICA

Mexico /The Maya Codex of Mexico “is authentic” and is the “oldest legible pre-Hispanic manuscript in the American continent,” said Diego Prieto, general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the institution said.

“According to studies it has been defined that the codex is prehispanic and has an age calculated by radiocarbon between years 1021 and 1154 of our era (Early Postclassic period), at the same time that it should have a useful life of approximately 104 years”, INAH referred in a statement.

All this makes it the oldest known prehispanic codex, it added.

Prieto spoke about this matter at a press conference prior to the start of the symposium “The Mayan Codex of Mexico, before Grolier”, in which he explained that the research on it was headed by Baltazar Brito and Sofía Martínez del Campo, from the Library National Anthropology and History (BNAH) and the National Coordination of Museums and Exhibitions of INAH, respectively.

The project brought together experts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) in Queretaro and the University of Colorado at Boulder, to examine the text.

The authenticity of the manuscript was questioned by two main questions: that it was obtained from looting, so there are no archaeological records of its original context; and that its style differs from other Mayan codices known and proven authentic.

Based in the Fray Bernardino de Sahagún auditorium of the National Museum of Anthropology, the symposium aims to summarize and present the results of a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional project that, between 2017 and 2018, directed the National Coordination of Museums and Exhibitions.

Martínez del Campo explained that a detailed photographic record was made, in addition to examinations of dating, materials, entomology, iconography, electronic microscopy, chemical-mineralogical characterization, morphometry, chronology, style and symbolism, among others.

By virtue of these results, the document must fulfill three mandates, as Brito explained: that it’s an original document; that from now on it should be named Codex Maya of Mexico; and that it must be recognized as an archaeological site and remain in the custody of BNAH, whose Codices Collection has the appointment of Memory of the World, granted by Unesco in 1997.

The 10 sheets of the codex -which measure, on average, 12.5 centimeters long and are theorized must have belonged to a set of at least 20 sheets- are supported by three layers of amate paper bark, he explained.

The specialists, supported by previous studies that had identified the presence of colors such as black and red, also found the presence of Mayan blue colors and pigments based on cochineal, as well as leftover drops of a chapopote resin with which, mentioned Martinez del Campo, was sprinkled with objects of a ritual nature.
