COVID-19, the disease caused by Wuhan’s coronavirus, left in China 508 new confirmed cases and 71 more deaths throughout Monday, as reported by the country’s health authorities.
These figures represent a 24% increase in new cases compared to the previous day, although the good news is that it reduces the number of deaths recorded on Monday by more than 52% compared to Sunday.
Thus, the cumulative number of deaths so far in China stands at 2,663 and confirmed cases, at 77,658, according to the latest balance sheet offered by the National Health Commission, updated until last midnight local time (GMT Monday 16.00).
Of the total confirmed cases, 47,672 are still active – of which 19%, more than 9,100 patients, are in serious condition – while 27,323 people have been discharged after overcoming the disease.
To date, more than 640,000 people who had close contact with the infected have been followed up, of which almost 88,000 are still under observation.
A representative of the Commission revealed yesterday that between 1 and 5 percent of the aforementioned close contacts end up testing positive to determine if they have contracted the disease.
The number of people suspected of being infected by the new coronavirus is currently 2,824.
The situation in China for the coronavirus
The Chinese health authority also made public today the latest balance of the disease in the province of Hubei, the focus of the epidemic, which so far accumulates 83% of cases and 96% of deaths recorded in China by COVID-19 .
On Monday there were 499 new cases and 68 new deaths in that province; 464 of the infections and 56 of the deaths correspond to its capital, Wuhan, where it is believed that the new coronavirus emerged, baptized as SARS-CoV-2.
So far there have been almost 65,000 confirmed cases and 2,563 deaths in Hubei, although the number of discharges continues to increase -2,116 patients cured in the last day – and is now 18,854.
Among the 43,369 active cases in the region, 8,675 are serious.
Continuing with the breakdown by region, official figures assume that in the rest of China only nine new cases and three deaths were detected: two in the eastern province of Shandong and another in the southeastern province of Guangzhou.
Although more than thirty countries have cases diagnosed with COVID-19, China accounts for around 97% of those infected.
The symptoms of the new disease are in many cases similar to those of a cold, but may be accompanied by fever and fatigue, dry cough and dyspnea (shortness of breath)
