THE POLEMIC BY PROFESIONAL SIGNING OF THE SPANISH PRESIDENT’S WIFE

Madrid / Instituto de Empresa (IE) sets up a Center for Africa (IE Africa Center) to promote innovation, leadership, entrepreneurship and social action projects and announces that it will be headed by Begoña Gómez, wife of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.

As reported by IE University through a press release, Gómez has more than 20 years of experience in consulting and teaching and has been director of Consulting for the Inmark Group.

Since 2015 she is co-director from the Master in Public and Private Fundraising for Non-Profit Organizations at the Higher Center for Management Studies of the Complutense University of Madrid.

In addition, says IE, she’s a professional specialized in the design and implementation of strategic projects with a focus on fundraising (attracting resources for NGOs) and sustainability for the third sector, adds Instituto de Empresa.

Africa Center, which depends on IE Foundation, will begin its activity next September and will be chaired by Felicia Appenteng, general director of the IE Fund in New York.

Sources from the Presidency of the Government have framed this new professional destiny of Gómez as another stage in his professional career, within the field of teaching in which he has been working.

Born in 1975 in Bilbao, Gómez grew up in León and has a degree in Marketing from the School of Commercial Engineers (ESIC), where she also completed a Master of Business Administration.

Dedicated to raising funds for NGOs, since 2000 she has been working for the company Task Force, absorbed in 2014 by Inmark Europe, which works on the design and implementation of external commercial teams and where she held the position of consultancy director for the subcontracting with other companies.

IE University is a private international university with campuses in Madrid and Segovia and has a faculty composed of more than 500 professors who currently teach students from 131 countries in university degrees, master’s programs, doctorates and executive training.

The polemic

The news of the signing of Begoña Gómez fueled the controversy in social networks by political parties in favour and against the signing.

PP referred to the issue in these terms: “the placement agency Pedro Sanchez has trespassed Ferraz’s limits to place his wife, Begoña Gómez, in the Instituto Empresa”.

The message was posted with the tags #Transparencia and # Quenoteengañen and immediately received almost a thousand referrals, including leaders and deputies of PP.

It was described as “scandal” by a woman deputy of this party, while another companion maintained that if the hired one had been the woman of the president of the PP, Pablo Casado, all would be speaking “at least” of an “improper bribe”.

The spokesman for Ciudadanos, Juan Carlos Girauta, recalled messages from Sánchez himself – one from 2013 and another from 2014 – criticizing the “capitalism of cronies” and the fact that IE placed as director of one of its centers a government adviser from Madrid.

Another deputy of Ciudadanos has also referred to this when asking on Twitter: “Is there anyone to give a job?”

However, from ERC it was considered that the critics to the signing of the president’s wife “have a bit of machismo in their faces”.

And also in defense of Begoña Gómez the deputy secretary general of the PSOE and former Minister of Development, José Blanco, wrote: “The reaction of the PP for hiring of Begoña Gómez, without assessing their training, ability, proven professional experience, is deeply macho”.(August 9, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
