Pope Francisco travels on 12 and 13 May to the sanctuary of Fatima in Portugal, which will be the first true pilgrimage of his pontificate, since there will be no official acts but only prayers and homilies.
“Friday and Saturday, God willing, I will travel as a pilgrim to Fatima to place in the hands of the Virgin the temporary and eternal destiny of humanity, and to plead for her intercession the blessings of heaven,” Francisco anticipated this Wednesday in the greeting to The Portuguese faithful in St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
Francisco will be a few hours in the sanctuary of Fatima to participate in the centenary of the apparitions and canonize, on Sunday, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, the two litle shepherd brothers who, along with their cousin Lúcia, appeared to them the Virgin Mary.
Pope Francis will arrive at 5 pm local time (16.00 GMT) at the shrine and this will be his 19 international trip, although for the Vatican it will not be an apostolic trip in itself, since there will be no speeches to the authorities or official visits.
Francisco will not visit Lisbon, because he will land at the Monte Real airbase and will hold a private meeting with the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, where there will be a traditional exchange of gifts, but no speeches.
From there you will be transferred by helicopter, a 20-minute flight, to the Fatima football stadium and from there you will travel about three kilometers in the “papamóvil” until you reach the sanctuary.
Its first stage will be the chapel, built in the place where the three shepherds claimed that they had witnessed several apparitions of the Virgin, and there will have a moment of private recollection; Then he will utter a prayer for the faithful and give them the blessing.
A prayer in which it is hoped that Francis, who on several occasions has maintained that we are immersed in a “Third World War in pieces”, pray for peace as Benedict XV did, in the middle of World War I and eight days before ( May 5) of the news of apparitions
