THE POPE’S SOLUTION FOR YOUTH EMPLOYMENT: REDUCING THE WORK SCHEDULE OF THE ELDERLY

Vatican City / Pope Francis has denounced that while the retirement age is delayed, many young people remain without work. For this reason, he believes that a new social pact is urgently needed to reduce working hours for the elderly and at the same time to hire young staff.

Before the delegates from the Italian Confederation of Trade Unions (CISL), the Pope assured that “it is a foolish and myopic society” that follows this logic, which make to work elderly, discarding the young.

He was categorical with issue of wages, because in his opinion, the right to a fair pension is not always recognized. That is, neither too poor nor rich. In this sense, he has criticized that “golden pensions” are “an offence to work no less serious than the poor because – in their opinion – they make the” inequalities of time “labour” perennial.”

Finally, he has encouraged the trade unions to defend the poor people and to “unmask the powerful people who trample on” – he said- “the rights of the most fragile workers.”

And, in his opinion, if trade unionism does not abide by the workers’ cause, it runs the risk of resembling too much “the institutions and powers that it should criticize”, for which the Argentine pope has lamented: trade unionism “with Time has come to look too much like politics, or rather, political parties” in “their language and style.”
