THE PRINCESS OF THE LETTERS AWARDS THE ETHICAL SENSE OF THE POLISH POET ZAGAJEWSKI

The poet Adam Zagajewski has become today the first Polish writer who obtains the Princess of Asturias Prize of the Letters after winning the playwright Juan Mayorga and the novelists Javier Marías and Michel Houellebecq in last voting of the jury.

Candidate for the Nobel Prize since 2007, he is considered a courageous intellectual, able to escape the universe of words to fight for the freedom of his compatriots during the communist period, an attitude that cost him 20 years of exile.

Born in 1945 in Lwów, a Polish city that is now part of Ukraine, Zagajewski lived from the tradition of his country’s poetry and together with other intellectuals formed a group of poets who entered the dangerous terrain of political demand by signing several manifestos in which he asked for more freedom.

After seeing his work banned, he was exiled in 1982 in France and the United States, where he found the shelter of several universities to maintain his literary activity, until in 2002, years after the fall of communism, returned to a Poland that received him with open arms .

Beyond his committed poetry against the communist regime, in the last decades his poems became more contemplative to enter the field of biographical and existential.

Thus, the jury has emphasized his ethical sense that makes the Western tradition feel one and diverse in his native Polish accent while at the same time he reflects damage of the exile in one of the most exciting poetic works of the heiress Europe of Rilke and Machado.
