The red rose on the tomb of Raphael in Rome honours 500 years of the painter’s death

Rome / A red rose on the tomb of the famous painter Raphael Sanzio in the Pantheon of Rome marks the starting point of the program with which Italy will honour throughout this 2020 the fifth centenary of the death of one of his most universal geniuses.

The Italian capital will put a rose every day in of this 2020 on the tomb of the famous Renaissance painter, born in Urbino in 1483 and died on April 6, 1520 in Rome at 37 years of age.

Raphael’s remains rest inside the great Pantheon of Agrippa, following his own wishes, inside a tomb designed by himself, but built by his disciple, the sculptor Lorenzo Lotti, on the altar of the Madonna del Sasso.

A simple inscription made by his friend Pietro Bembo marks the place, by way of praise to his creative painter strength: “Here, lies Rafael, who while living made nature fear being overcome by him and who, when he died, was afraid to die with him”, it says.

Tribute and activities for the fifth centenary of Raphael’s death

Thus, Italy begins to celebrate the fifth centenary of the death of one of its most universal geniuses, after a 2019 dedicated to the 500 years of the death in France of another icon, Leonardo Da Vinci.

But he will receive special attention in Rome, where he left much of his artistic legacy, especially in the Vatican, where he achieved glory at the orders of the popes Julius II and Leo X and their respective courts.

For them, in fact, he made some of his most famous works, such as the fresco of “The School of Athens”, which decorates the Apostolic Palace, among many others.

In the program of events to remind you prepared by the Ministry of Culture, a great exhibition stands out in the Escuderías del Palacio del Quirinale in Rome between March 5 and June 2, which will bring together 200 Raphael’s works, including paintings and sketches.

About fifty pieces will come from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where Raphael spent part of his life, and many others will arrive from museums such as the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London or the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

The Spanish institution is expected specifically “The Virgin of the Rose”, painted around 1517.

He will also pay homage to the painter his hometown, Urbino, an old city of Las Marcas and nerve center of the Renaissance and where you can visit his hometown and his family’s workshop.

Specifically, the exhibition “Raphael and the friends of Urbino” is already open, which investigates the links of genius with a group of painters and artisans who enriched their training and, therefore, their transition to fame in Rome in the last part of his life.
