THE RIGHT, LED BY THE NORTH LEAGUE, THE MOST VOTED, BUT WITHOUT MAJORITY

Rome / The right, led by Northern League, was the most voted coalition in the elections on Sunday in Italy, with 37.01%, and the Five Stars Movement (M5S) the party with the most votes with 32.53%, but none with a majority of Government.

The result is that nobody wins in these elections and only future alliances and programmatic pacts, all with the approval of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, may give this country a new Government, which will not happen until the beginning of April.

After more than 12 hours of scrutiny the definitive results show the growth of the M5S, which in the elections of 2013 had reached 25%, and especially the rise at the national level of the Northern League, with 17.48%, which had achieved 4.08% five years ago.

The results also certify the Northern League has become the most voted party of the right when it surpasses by almost four points the Forza Italia of Silvio Berlusconi, who was in the 14,03% of the votes.

The data refer to the Chamber of Deputies, while in the Senate the results only have slight differences, but now we will have to wait for the distribution of the seats.

The convoluted electoral law provides that 36% of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate are assigned with a majority system based on single-member districts and 64% proportionally.

Despite the lack of precise data on the seats, these results do not give any of the coalitions, nor the M5S, the majority of the 316 needed to govern.

The official results also certify the defeat of the Democratic Party (PD), the outgoing Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, but above all its leader Matteo Renzi, not exceeding 20% for the time being and remaining in 18.8% of the votes.

Bad result of Renzi

For some analysts, this dismal result will mean the resignation of Renzi and during the day this hypothesis arose, denied by a spokesman of the former prime minister, so he will have to wait for his appearance this afternoon before the press.

In total, the center-left coalition would get 22.97% due to the alliance with other political forces such as Emma Bonino’s Europe, which have fallen below the 3% that was required to enter the Parliament and therefore see their votes distributed in the coalition.

Northern League

The uncertainty grew during the day with the statements of the leader of the Northern League, Matteo Salvini, who defended his right to govern by leading the coalition that has obtained the most votes and excluded extravagant pacts, in reference to possible alliances with the M5S.

“The team on which to reason and govern is that of the center-right. I keep my word and my commitment, which is with the center-right coalition, which has won and can govern, “he said during a press conference.

Luigi Di Maio, M5S

More conciliator was the candidate of the Five Star Movement (M5S), Luigi Di Maio, who although presented today as “absolute winner”, advanced that is “open to negotiate with other parties” in the absence of a majority.

With this convoluted scenario, the steps to follow to begin the legislature will be, first, the convocation of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to elect the presidents and that is scheduled for March 23.

The possible agreements to elect the presidents of Parliament could already serve as an indication to the head of state, Sergio Mattarella, who will then open a round of consultations.

Mattarella will have to choose the personality to whom to commission an Executive between Salvini or Di Maio, since both do not seem to want to cede the presidency of the Government. (March 5, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
