Madrid/ After more than 20 years without being in the Teatro Royal, the Royal Ballet returns with a humanized production “El lago de los cisnes” by the hand of British choreographer Liam Scarlett.
This is how Scarlett expressed during the presentation of this new proposal of the Real that will be in Madrid from July 18 to 22, in the six performance led by the Argentine dancer Marianela Núñex and the Russian dancer Vadim Muntagirov.
“It is a classic and traditional choreography at the same time (…) I wanted to show how (the characters) develop and interact”, Scarlett explained about his proposal, which revolves around the original by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov (1895), and which includes the Napolitan dance of Frederick Ashton.
Thus, by taking responsability for this show, which arrives in Madrid after its premiere in London, he has also alked himself what had made this ballet “have survived” until our days since the premiere in 1977:
“And I thought that the factor had been the wonderful score by Piotr IIyich Tchaikovsky“, he said.
The performances, which will feature the official orchestra of the Teatro Real under the direction of Koen Kessels, will also be starring Núñez and Muntagirov, who will perform on July 18 and 22, in the roles of Odette / Odile and Prince Siegfried, with Yasmine Naghdi and Matthew Ball (July 19), Sara Lamb and Ryoichi Hirano (July 20) or Akane Takada and William Bracewell (July 21 at 5:00 p.m.).
With a setting of the late nineteenth century, this “Lago de los cisnes” has the costumes and scenery designed by John Macfarlane, a designer who, according to the director of the Royal Ballet, Kevin o’Hare, has “recovered” the tutu because in a “purely classical ballet” there had to be this closing.
The Royal Ballet was the first dance company to perform at the newly opened Teatro Real, in November 1997, performing “La bella durmiente.” (July 18, 2018, EFE/PracticaEspañol)
