The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won general elections held on Sunday in the country, whose legitimacy has been questioned after the banning of the main opposition party.
According to the preliminary results broadcasted by state television, the party has imposed itself in the 25 provinces with more than 80% of the valid votes cast.
The results, which the electoral commission plans to officially announce on August 15, would allow the formation to win the great majority of the 125 seats in the parliament that were at stake in the vote.
The verdict of the polls also allows to extend five years more the mandate of the prime minister, Hun Sen, who has held the post since 1985 and who shortly after the close of the polls thanked the electorate.
More than 8 million Cambodians were called to the polls in these elections to which nineteen other candidates were presented, among which was not the opposition party, which had called for a boycott of the vote.
The electoral commission denied any effect of the boycott by placing participation at 82%, thirteen points more than five years ago.
The offensive against the opposition, which spread to civil society and the independent press, has multiplied the voices that in recent weeks have questioned the cleanliness of the vote and denounced the drift of Cambodia towards a single-party state and a greater authoritarianism.
