THE “SÁNCHEZ EFFECT” POSITIONS PSOE TO 9 POINTS OF THE PP AND CIUDADANOS

Madrid/ In Spain, the arrival of Pedro Sánchez at the Moncloa Palace has triggered the PSOE and placed him as the first political force with 29.9 percent of the vote, surpassing the PP and Ciudadanos as much as 9.5 points, according to the barometer of the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) in July.

According to this survey, the socialists raise almost eight points in vote estimate since the barometer done in April, while the ‘populars’ decrease almost four points and Ciudadanos two, both tied in vote estimate (20,4%).

Meanwhile, Podemos and its confluences also lose four points and have 15.6 percent of the support in the estimate made by the CIS.

The survey reflects the arrival of Sánchez, but it does not take into account the new leadership in the PP, since its field work took place between July 1 and July 10, when the process of the popular primaries had not yen been completed with the election of Pablo Casado.

The survey shows an increase of ERC of nine tenths, up to 3.9 percent and a drop in the PdeCat by four tenths, to 1.3 percent.

For its parts, the PNV loses only one tenth (1.2%) and Bildu remains stable with 0.6 percent of the estimated support. Coalición Canaria is left one tenth to 0.2 percent.

In a direct vote, which shows the immediate response of the survey respondent without the subsequent calculations of the CIS, the PSOE’s rise is even greater and its difference with the rest of the forces is greater.

The PSOE obtained 23.9 percent of direct vote, 10.4 points more than in April, and placed 12.6 points above Ciudadanos (11.3%) and up to 13.7 points above the Popular Party ( 10.2%).

These two parties also lose direct support: Ciudadanos leave 4.8 points and PP 1.9.

Unidos Podemos and its confluences also see their direct vote decrease, which is reduced by 2.4 points to 8.9 percent. (August 2, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
