THE SCANDAL OF THE INSEMINATIONS IN NETHERLANDS

Dutch justice will decide next June 2 on the exhumation of the body of the Dutch doctor, Jan Karbaat, who allegedly used his own sperm to inseminate dozens of women without her consent from the assisted reproduction clinic he was running.

This week it has been confirmed that at least 18 people are Karbaat’s daughters biologically, after performing tests of comparison with the DNA of the doctor’s legitimate son, reports EFE.

To prove that dozens of people born by artificial insemination are sons and daughters of the same father, Karbaat’s DNA is required, but his wife opposes exhuming the corpse of the doctor, who died a month ago at age 89.

Karbaat died just weeks before the start of a court case filed by a group of people who requested DNA testing to confirm their suspicions that this doctor was their biological father.

Some 10,000 people, who are now 40 years old, were born from inseminations made to about 6,000 women in the Karbaat clinic during the four decades in which this doctor practised.

Dozens of affected people suspect, both for physical similarities of their children with the doctor and for several coincidences, that Karbaat inseminated them with their sperm without warning them of it and exceeding the legal limit of 25 donations per person.

He always denied having done “something bad” during his acts and assured that he donated his sperm because he considered himself “healthy and smart”, and he should leave his legacy “to humanity”.

On June 2, the court will decide on the possible exhumation of the body and the corresponding evidence in a court case involving 25 people affected.

His clinic was one of the largest in the country and not only supplied sperm to his own clients, but distributed it because of the different centres of insemination that the country had.

The clinic closed in 2009 by order of the Inspection of the Dutch Ministry of Health due to successive scandals that related its director with serious legal and ethical failures.
