THE SIX TOWERS OF THE SAGRADA FAMILIA WILL BE FINISHED IN 2022

Barcelona / The six central towers of the temple of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona will be finished in 2022, according to the architect of the temple, Jordi Faulí.

The Tower of the Virgin began to be built last December following a technique of pressed stone panels that allows not to use external, so that the growth of the tower is visible from the outside.

Of the 138 meters of height that the tower is expected to have in 2022, they have already risen 79 meters and by the end of the year is expected to reach 85 meters, Faulí explained.

The overall annual budget of the Sagrada Familia in 2017 is 78 million, of which 48.9 are allocated for the execution of works and last year received a visit of 4,561,848 people.

With nine years to finish the temple designed by Antoni Gaudí, which is expected to be finished in 2026, the architect director has said that the set of 18 towers will be “extraordinary, and it will offer a different view depending on the time of day and from every angle.”

About the constructive technique used to raise the Tower of the Virgin, Faulí explained that the panels are “structural elements at the same time as aesthetic”, and the construction process is “safer and faster”.

Located on the apse, this tower will have 19 levels, its interior will be an empty monumental space, will embrace the great hyperbole that gives light to the altar and will lead the light from the outside to the presbytery.

There are parabolic stone elements, with edges in the corners of granite blue, that evoke the mantle of the Virgin, on the outside of the tower.

On its base, the text of the Hail Mary and reliefs of four flowers, designed by the sculptors’ workshop of the temple, under the direction of Etsuro Sotoo, have been sculpted and made in the workshop of stonecutters in the temple.

In addition, this year have been followed by the construction of the Towers of Juan and Mateo, which have reached 80.83 meters in height, and those of Marcos and Lucas, which have reached 83.87 meters of the 135 that will have in 2022, when the architectural team is challenged to complete the six central towers.

Located at twenty meters high, this year has ended the space between the wall of the prophets of the upper portico and the base of the central window of the façade of the Passion.

Jordi Faulí has described it as a space of silence and recollection, thought for reflection and prayer, and has also finished the restoration of the terminal of the Tower of San Felipe, located on the Façade of the Passion, covered with stoneware enamelled, brick, Venetian glass and stone.

The forecast for 2018 is to start the construction of the Tower of Jesus Christ, which with 172.5 meters will be the highest height of the whole, and it will rise with the same technique of stone panels.

The interior of the tower will have a first space of 60 meters high that it will contain a staircase core where an elevator with a glass closure will be located, has detailed the architect.

Jordi Faulí explained that they are working on the final project of the terminals of the six central towers and work continues on the drafting of the Master Plan for the restoration of the Façade of the Birth. (September 22, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
