The already known as “snowfall of the century” has buried Russian capital under a mantle of half a metre of snow, has caused the fall of two thousand trees, one of which has killed one person, and has caused 200 kilometres of traffic jams in the roads of the city and more than one hundred delays in the airports.
“I do remember nothing like it since I was a boy. In two days, it has snowed more than in the whole winter”, Vitali, a 68-year-old Muscovite, told EFE, after being predicted by weather forecast a heavy snowfall during the first weekend in February.
According to the authorities, to clean the city of all the precipitations fallen in two days it takes at least nine working days, but “they will take the necessary measures” to accelerate that work.
The official added cleaning works are made difficult by the cold with 17 degrees below zero and forecasts that predict the continuity of the snowfall – with less intensity – during the next three days.
The authorities have recommended don’t use car and travelling by public transport.
“It’s the first time in one hundred years that so much snow has fallen. A real challenge for public services, “acknowledged Deputy Mayor of Moscow, Piotr Biriukov.
The snow has also led to partial suspension of classes in Moscow schools.
During the past weekend, the public services removed from the streets and highways the record figure of 1.2 million cubic meters of snow.
From one end of the square you can barely make out the domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral or the clock of the Spásskaya Kremlin tower.
Hats and scarves are not enough and the umbrellas of the wardrobe are also rescued to protect themselves from the snowflakes.
Svetalana, 59, admits that she has not seen anything like it since she works as a sweeper, which she has a heavy shovel instead of a broom. (February 5, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
