Caracas / The self-proclaimed interim president of Venezuela and head of the Venezuelan Parliament, Juan Guaido, thanked the support given by the US President, Donald Trump, and other governments and institutions in the world.
Juan Guaido has been recognized as president by the United States, Brazil, Canada and other Latin American countries such as Argentina, Colombia and Chile, but not by Turkey whose president Erdogan has expressed his support for Nicolas Maduro.
“On behalf of all #Venezuela, I appreciate your commitment to support the will of the Venezuelan people,” said Guaido through his Twitter account, in response to the message of recognition of his self-proclamation that Trump sent on the same social network.
He also responded to the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, who not only said to support Guaido as acting president and support him in his “mission of recovering democracy” and human rights, but also called for “free elections” in Venezuela.
“We are grateful for the recognition that today gives to the Venezuelan people. And their commitment to respect for human rights and the recovery of the rule of law of our nation”, Guaido said in his Twitter account.
He also thanked the presidents of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and of Paraguay, Mario Abdo.
In addition, he responded to messages of support from the governments of Argentina, Colombia and Peru, which through their foreign ministries expressed who recognize him as interim president of the oil country.
To the Presidents of the European Council, Donald Tusk and of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, also expressed his gratitude for supporting “the struggle for democracy” in Venezuela.
Guaido proclaimed himself as interim president of Venezuela at the end of a march in Caracas to reject the second term of Nicolas Maduro, whom his opponents consider “illegitimate” because he was elected in a vote which they considers fraudulent.
The Government of Maduro has reacted by asking the Justice to act against this advance of Parliament and its directive and throwing of the country to the American diplomacy, which accuses of orchestrating this opposition plan to seize power. (January 24, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
