The Tango World Cup opens a particular online edition due to COVID-19

Buenos Aires / The Buenos Aires Tango World Cup, one of the reference events in this dance specialty and one of the events that brought together thousands of people in the Argentine capital, began a new edition this Wednesday, which is held online due to the pandemic of COVID-19.

It is an unprecedented way of carrying out the festival, due to the circumstances, but the organization devised a format so that this typical Buenos Aires dance does not stop from today until the next day 30, when the competition will close.

Public vote rules

According to a statement from the organizers, the Tango World Cup has invited dancers to participate to record videos from their homes and the public can vote from this Wednesday on those that the jury decrees as finalists.

The final selection will be reduced to five finalists in the Stage Tango category and ten in the Track Tango Style category, the two main modalities offered by the World Cup, and spectators will be able to vote from the Citizen Participation website of the city of Buenos Aires.

The winner of this never-before-seen edition of the traditional contest will be announced on August 30.

In addition to the central categories, the public can also vote in two other sections, “Cantá en el Festival”, in which tango singers sent their videos with the recording of a tango performed at their choice, and “Videoclips de Tango”, dedicated to soloists and tango groups.

A whole festival to dance tango from home

The Government of the city of Buenos Aires organizes the World Cup under the artistic direction of Gabriel Soria, and in a dance accustomed to being close, the organizers acknowledged that they “miss the hug”, and for that reason they will also offer various digital content framed in the Festival de Tango, which accompanies the World Cup.

There will be nearly 200 online content from tango artists such as Amelita Baltar, Juan Carlos Copes, Sandra Luna, José Colángelo, Walter Ríos and Pipi Piazzolla, among others.

Women dominated the opening of the festival

The management indicated that in this edition there is a “multidisciplinary opening” that focuses on the presence and role of women in tango ”.

Specifically, the opening night of the Buenos Aires Tango World Cup and Festival was starred by a concert carried out entirely by leading women in the world of tango.

The piece “Nosotras y el tango”, performed in unison by some of the most prominent representatives of the style, such as Sandra Luna, in videos recorded by each one from their homes, opened the ban on a broadcast that was offered on YouTube.

This special overture was followed by the classic “Volver”, by the mythical Carlos Gardel, by the group “Sin Fronteras”.

The festival offers these days, always online, dance classes for children and adults, milongas, talks and movies, as well as tributes to figures of tango culture such as Astor Piazzolla, Mariano Mores, Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Juan Carlos Copes, Gloria and Rodolfo Dinzel, María Nieves and Gloria Arquimbau.
