THE TEMPERATURE IN THE OCEANS INCREASES AT AN UNSTOPPABLE RATE, ACCORDING TO A STUDY

Washington / The average temperature of the oceans reached its maximum values in 2018 in an increase which is occurring more quickly, according to a study published in the journal Science.

The scientific article arose from the question “How quickly are the oceans warming up?”, And in its subtitle part of the answer: “Observation records on the temperature of the oceans show that their warming is accelerating.”

In this way, 2018 closed as the warmest year for the set of waters on the planet and, therefore, also for the Earth.

To find out, the scientists used a new measurement system, called Argo, which consists of a network of autonomous observation floats that have recorded information for 13 years.

This method was combined with parallel work to improve and improve the previous ocean records and that has allowed to reconstruct the temperatures of its waters since 1960.

Thus, the new study, led by Lijing Cheng of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted how, by combining the new results and the previous ones, it was found that not only are the oceans gradually warming up, but that process is accelerating more and more.

The oceans, the report recalls, are the main memory of climate change, since they absorb approximately 93% of the Earth’s energy imbalance, which is created by the increase of polluting gases that certain human activities release into the atmosphere.

In addition, the study insists, this warming contributes to sea level rise, intensifies rain and generates more lasting and stronger storms, such as Harvey hurricanes in 2017 and Florence in 2018.

If no action is taken, the researchers conclude, from the year 2080 the oceans will have warmed six times more than what they have done over the past 60 years, the same period of time as contemplated in that forecast. (January 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
