Madrid / On Wednesday, Madrid faces the third day of the indefinite strike called by the taxi drivers of the region, which coincides with the inauguration of Fitur at Ifema, the most important fair in the capital which is expected to attend more than 250,000 visitors.
The sector doesn’t give up on their claims and continues with this strike, which yesterday left its first serious person injured when a taxi driver was hit by a VTC after it rushed into the vehicle during a picket on the A-2.
After refusing to break negotiations with the regional government by rejecting their proposal to regulate the VTC, the taxi drivers have located their “base camp” at the Feria de Madrid (Ifema), where they have parked their vehicles, have held assemblies.
From there they left yesterday in spontaneous groups to the highways that give access to Ifema and the Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas airport to cut the roads M-40, the M-11 and the A-2.
The pre-contracting of the service of the VTC was the main obstacle in the negotiation table of the leaders of the taxi sector with the Community of Madrid, which refused to include in the draft of reform of the regional law of urban transport a minimum of six hours for be able to book these vehicles, understanding that this point should be set by the municipalities.
Speaking to EFE, the vice president of the Professional Taxi Federation of Madrid, Jesus Fernandez, has claimed the Community of Madrid and the City Council of the capital feel to negotiate with the taxi sector a regulation of rental vehicles with driver (VTC).
Fernandez has rejected the regulation of the pre-contracting of the VTC by the municipalities as proposed by the regional government because it considers that “municipal ordinances do not have the same force as a law” and that they can be challenged in the courts.
Therefore, he stressed the need for regional and local administrations to agree to negotiate with the taxi sector to analyse the “legal coverage” that the Community offers to municipalities.
He regretted “the lack of courage” of the regional government in its proposal to reform the Law of Ordination and Coordination of Urban Transport of the Community of Madrid for not regulating the pre-contracting of the VTC.
The vice president of the Professional Taxi Federation of Madrid has apologized to the locals and visitors for the inconvenience that may cause the taxi drivers strike.
He has condemned the “acts of violence” provoked by some “exaltados” who “hurt the taxi sector”, although he has shown “the discomfort and frustration” of the collective with some politicians such as the leader of Citizens, Albert Rivera, who defended to the self-employed, but then bet “for not putting doors to the field.”
After holding a meeting with representatives of the VTC, the president of the Community of Madrid, Angel Garrido, has said he will not legislate to eliminate a sector, but to achieve “harmonious coexistence” between taxis and rental vehicles with driver (VTC).
