The town of Estepa (Seville, Spain), famous for its ‘polvorones’ and ‘mantecados’, anticipates two months and turns on the Christmas lighting before anyone else in Europe

Estepa (Seville, Spain) / It’s Christmas in Estepa. This Spanish town, in Seville, famous for its ‘polvorones’ and ‘mantecados’, shows its official Christmas lighting since November 3 and it is the first town in Europe that has turned on the lights for Christmas holidays which are celebrated from December 24 to 6 January.

Estepa lights don’t turn off during the day and will be on for two months in most of the streets of the municipality, but it is a lighting with LED technology, which guarantees lower consumption, according to the mayor of the town.

Estepa received in 2018 about 32,000 tourists coinciding with the previous dates to Christmas time and that has been one of the reasons to anticipate the lighting of its streets to highlight these holidays.

The Christmas campaign is an economic incentive for this town since the production and sale of Christmas sweets causes unemployment to fall to 6.7% in the town, which also benefits a good part of the region.

In Estepa, southeast of Seville, which has been making shortbread for more than a century, most of the industries in the region dedicated to the production and packaging of shortcakes and ‘polvorones’ with designation of origin are located.

The origin of their ‘polvorones’

The origin that marks the tradition of these Spanish sweets “goes back to the 16th century and to the Convent of Santa Clara de Estepa, where references and ancient recipes are preserved, and where they even had confectioners hired to meet the demand that came to them from Seville or Madrid”, states on the website of the Regulatory Council.

Although historical references reach the sixteenth century, it is in the nineteenth century that the birth and commercialization of this ‘mantecado’ takes place.

Almost all households produced the “tortas de manteca”, some sweets made with lard, wheat flour and sugar, but those of Micaela Ruiz Téllez, which began its commercialization, achieved a great reputation because it refined the flour, toasted and It made them softer.

By this time, Estepa lives for its ‘polvorones’ and ‘mantecados’ and most of its families participate in some of the work that is carried out in the factories that, in some cases, are already directed by the fifth family generation.

The Sevillian town of Estepa, also known as the “balcony of Andalusia”, is inhabited by some 12,000 neighbours. (November 6, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
