The largest silver treasure of the Andes is invaluable and can be seen in Peru in an exhibition of more than 350 pieces, some of them unique, which makes a review of 400 years for the tradition of Andean silverware, from civilizations that preceded the Incas until the 20th century.
The exhibition, titled “Silver of the Andes” is in the Art Museum of Lima (MALI) from July 18 to October 28, and is the largest ever made, said its official, Ricardo Kusunoki, to EFE. charge of the show with the historian Luis Eduardo Wuffarden.
Many of the pieces are exhibited for the first time and come from ecclesiastical, state and private collections throughout the country, especially Lima, Cusco and Arequipa.
Prehispanic goldwork, colonial liturgical objects, silverware for civil use, jewelry and costumes of dancers: there is enough money to remember what was the rescue of Atahualpa, the last Inca, kidnapped by the Spanish conquerors in the sixteenth century and for whose liberation they paid more than 6 tons of gold and about twelve tons of silver.
Exposed masks, keros (ceremonial vessels) and tupus (pins), belonging to the Tiahuanaco civilization, which inhabited around Lake Titicaca, and the Chimú, the empire of the north coast that preceded the Incas.
From the colonial era, pieces of Spanish Catholic sacred art stand out, among them the altarpieces and the custodies that surround a large map where the silver route of Potosí is drawn, the largest world site of that precious metal when it was discovered in 1545, as well as the “Brazo de Plata” by Melchor Portocarrero, the pelican forged to life size in the 18th century and the trousseau of the Virgin of Cocharcas, a suit of silver plates made at the end of the 18th century.
