THE UNANIMOUS SENTENCE OF LULA FOR CORRUPTION

Porto Alegre (Brazil) / Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is closer to his political disqualification after a court of second instance convicted him of corruption and money laundering and increased his sentence to twelve years and one month in prison.

After almost ten hours of session, the three judges that make up the eighth room in the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region, located in the city of Porto Alegre, decided to raise the penalty of nine and a half years in prison for the same crimes, dictated in first instance against former president.

The magistrates maintained a hard tone against the leader of the Party of the Workers (PT) with demolishing phrases that demolished the arguments of their defense when considering that the “violations” committed were “extremely serious”.

In this case, one of the seven opened against him in the Justice, the majority for alleged corruption, Lula was convicted of alleged bribes of the construction company OAS, which would have resulted in the delivery of a luxury apartment on the beach in exchange of favoring the company in contracts with Petrobras.

The decision, although it is appealable, complicates the options of the head of state to compete in the presidential elections in October since, according to the Brazilian legislation, the condemned ones in second instance can not be postulated.

However, the last word on Lula’s candidacy, who leads all opinion polls and has expressed his intention to present himself, is in the hands of the Electoral Justice.

The trial took place amid strong security measures, which forced the establishment of a perimeter around the court and the blocking of traffic in the area by land, sea and air with a notable number of police.

The ratification of the sentence coincides with an election year in a country that is polarized and hit by the multiple corruption scandals that splash practically all political parties.
