THE ‘VERANILLO’ OF SAN MIGUEL

Madrid / The popular “veranillo” of San Miguel (Indian summer) has arrived punctually to its date at the end of September and the stable weather and the high temperatures will predominate in practically all the country during the weekend, with values that will hover and surpass the thirty degrees in many places.

The prediction by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) indicates that this stable time and without precipitation is going to continue during the next few days and that is expected occasional rains in some areas of the north peninsular and in the Canary Islands.

In the Pyrenees and in the eastern half of Catalonia these precipitations could be accompanied by a storm and reach a strong intensity in some points, and showers will extend to the Balearics on Sunday.

Today, thermometers will widely exceed 30 degrees in several cities, such as Seville (33), Cordova (33), and Badajoz (33), and that temperature will be in many places also along the Mediterranean coast, central and northern peninsular.

The Aemet spokesman, Ruben del Campo, has defined the weather conditions as anticyclonic and has implied that the values are much higher than those usually registered at that time of year.

Speaking to EFE, Ruben del Campo said that these anomalies will be more significant in the north than in the south, and noted that although the maximum temperatures will be recorded in some cities in the southern half, in those places those maximums will be “alone”between 3 and 5 degrees above normal.

But in many places in the northern half, especially in points north of Castilla y León and the Cantabrian coast, the maximum temperatures to be achieved today and during the weekend will be between 5 and 10 degrees above normal, and even above those 10 difference in the Pyrenees.

During the day tomorrow, temperatures will drop significantly in many places in the northern third (for example, Logroño will reach 30 degrees and will remain at 22 degrees tomorrow), but these will rise again on Sunday.

It is the characteristic “roller coaster” (rising and falling temperatures) in late September, according to the spokesman of the State Meteorological Agency.

Ruben del Campo has predicted that stable weather and high temperatures, “very” above the usual values of the first days of October, will continue on Monday and will last until at least Thursday.

This characteristic stability of anticyclonic weather, with high temperatures and clear skies, will only be interrupted next week by some scattered precipitation in the Cantabrian and Mediterranean areas.

Today, the maximum temperatures will exceed twenty degrees in all provincial capitals, and the lowest are scheduled in La Coruna (21), Oviedo (24) or Pontevedra (23).

The difference between minimum and maximum temperatures is also very significant, as in cities such as Palencia or Burgos, where thermometers have dropped to 6 degrees during the night, these will register values of up to 28 in the central hours of the day.

Rubén del Campo has also alluded to the popular and characteristic “veranillo” of San Miguel and to the anomalies typical of the end of September; are many popular sayings that allude to the climatological benefits of this time of year.

“El verano de San Miguel faltará rara vez”; “Por el veranillo de San Miguel los frutos como la miel”; or “Para San Miguel, primer la nuez, la castaña después”, these refer to this meteorological stability that for the moment will be prolonged during the next week.
