Skopje / The capital of Northern Macedonia and the home town of Mother Teresa, Skopje, is preparing to receive Pope Francis on Tuesday, during the first visit made by a Supreme Pontiff to this former Yugoslav republic.
Francis will visit, during his ten-hour brief stay, the memorial house of the most famous Catholic citizen of Skopje, Agnesa Bojaxhi, known worldwide as Mother Teresa, located in the heart of the capital.
With a population dominated by Orthodox Christians (65%) and Sunni Muslims (30%), Northern Macedonia has only a small Catholic community of 25,000 people, representing 0.4% of the total.
Northern Macedonia is a country of conservative traditions and only 0.5% of the population doesn’t belong to any religious denomination.
Skopje and the southeastern part of Northern Macedonia are considered the nucleus of the country’s Catholic communities. Different Christian communities live in the municipality of Strumica and you can find Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, Evangelist or Jehovah’s Witness churches in many villages.
Cleaning in the streets of Skopje
On the occasion of this exceptional visit, the capital of this small Balkan country has undergone a thorough cleaning.
Some road which connect the city with the airport have been paved and in the main square, “Macedonia”, the concrete and brick skeletons of buildings that are still under construction have been covered with white cloths, while, for safety reasons, the sewers have been sealed.
The Pope will celebrate a Mass in this square, where a large podium has been erected near the statue of Alexander the Great, who is the central figure in this emblematic place.
From six in the morning until six in the afternoon, when the Pope will have left for Rome, the center of the capital will be completely closed to traffic. Only residents can enter the high security perimeter with special passes they have obtained from the Police.
Also the regular medical check-ups at the central Skopje state clinic have been postponed the next day.
Media coverage of the visit
Beyond the official preparations, the visit has had scarce media coverage so far. On some of the main boulevards and on some double-decker buses you can see posters with Francis’ face.
Citizens, however, are aware that they will host an exceptional guest.
“Having the holy father here in Skopje is one of the happiest days of my life. I feel a very positive spirit in the city these days”, the Catholic Vangel told EFE while queuing to get an entry for tomorrow’s mass.
“The interest of citizens for the Pope’s visit is great even for those who do not belong to our Catholic community. Many have come to take a ticket”, said Zoran Angelov, a priest at the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in Skopje.
Some 12,000 citizens are expected to attend mass mass and the rains that began this weekend end on Tuesday morning to welcome the Pope in a sunny environment. (May 6, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
