After almost 60 years governed by the Castro brothers, Cuba is preparing to have a new generation in power and the last step to guarantee this relief will take place this Sunday, March 11, when the deputies of the new parliament will be elected, which will elect the new president in April.
More than eight million Cubans will go to the polls in a vote that in practice involves the ratification of the 605 candidates who hold the same number of seats that the unicameral parliament of the country has.
Everything points to the fact that the one chosen that day to succeed Raúl Castro in the presidency will be his “number two” in the Government since 2013, the first vice-president Miguel Díaz-Canel, 57, formed on the bases of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), the only legal on the island.
If these predictions are confirmed, Díaz-Canel would be the first Cuban leader born after the triumph of the revolution in almost six decades.
However, for many in practice this relief would only be a symbolic change, because Raul Castro will remain until 2021 at the head of the Communist Party, a formation that controls all the structures of the Caribbean country. (March 11, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
