The weapons with microwave waves that China is developing

Beijing / The Chinese government is developing a “non-lethal” weapons system with microwave radar technology for anti-terrorism and border defence work, according to local media.

The project’s chief engineer named himself Su and has declared to the pro-government newspaper Global Times that these weapons fire “millimetre microwave waves” which are able to reach the nerve endings and inflict pain without causing permanent injuries or physical problems.

The project is called “Active Rejection Microwave System” and its purpose is to stop violent actions and disperse objectives, the newspaper says.

And it has two operational variables: one designed to attack “specific parts” of the objectives, and another based on a “sector-swept” system for larger areas where there are terrorist groups.

The weapon is designed for the police and the Coast Guard of the country, can be used in counter-terrorist operations, for the protection of targets during important events, missions of maritime convoys and border defence by land.

And as he explained, compared to similar products from other countries, this system is “much smaller” in size and lighter.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) estimates China is the second country in the world that spends most on defence spending, around 228,000 million dollars in 2017, only behind the United States.

The newspaper also argues that since the arrival of Xi Jinping to power in 2012, the Asian country has increased its military budget by 45 percent, compared to the decreases of 12 and 18.6 percent attributed to the US and Russia, respectively. (February 23, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
