Thirty-four new Swiss Guards swear allegiance to the pope

Vatican City / Thirty-four Swiss Guards swore eternal fidelity to Pope Francis and his successors, during a ceremony held at the Vatican, thus joining the ranks of the smallest army in the world.

The ceremony was held in the Vatican’s St Damasus courtyard and in the past was usually attended by members of the Roman Curia, the Swiss diplomatic corps and family members, but this year, for the second time in a row, it had to be held with a small group of people due to the coronavirus pandemic and could be followed on social media.

The oath of the recruits is celebrated every year on May 6, in commemoration of the Sack of Rome (1527), when 147 Swiss Guards died for defending Pope Clement VI from the assault of the troops of the Spanish Emperor Charles V.

As usual, each of the soldiers was called by his name and all of them raised three fingers of the right hand to symbolize the Trinity, while with the left hand they shook the flag of the body.

In a loud voice, they recited the formula of the oath: “I swear to serve faithfully, loyally and honourably the reigning pontiff and his legitimate successors, that I will devote myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing, if necessary, even my life in their defence.

The Swiss Guard was created in 1506, when Pope Julius II negotiated with the Swiss cantons to send volunteers to form a personal guard and their residence in Rome. (May 7, 2021, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
