TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON THE PAVING TO ADDICTED TO CELL PHONE IN NETHERLANDS

Bodegraven City Council, in the south of the Netherlands, has installed a system that illuminates paving with a red and green line to warn the pedestrians addicted to the cell phone when it is dangerous to cross the street.

Social networks, applications as Whatsapp, and music often “have people with their heads down and their eyes focused on the screen of the cell phone” and not in traffic, EFE explained the traffic manager in the municipality, Dolf Roodemburg.

Next-generation phones cause the main distractions of traffic which end in accident. “In the Netherlands and around the world,” he said.

At the moment, the system is installed in four points of Bodegraven, still in test phase, but other municipalities of Netherlands have shown interest in adopting this lighting, according to Roodenburg.

The official explained that it is a matter of “avoiding accidents” among addicted to cell phone, although Roodenburg admitted that in his city, that is very small, “there are not many traffic accidents” caused by distraction.

However, this is an experiment that will be implemented in other Dutch cities, such as Amsterdam, where these incidents are more frequent.

“The initiative is having a lot of success and many municipalities have already contacted us to start adopting the system,” explains Roodenburg, who also said that even “other countries” are interested in this system.

The idea is to “anticipate” the danger – he explains- because the light is placed strategically at “the same point where the eyes are focused on those who are looking at the cell phones.”

He regrets that, “since we can not eradicate or fight against this problem, we must adapt to the problem”.

Bodegraven ruler, Kees Oskam, also applauded this “satisfactory” initiative.

“We may not be able to change the trend but we can anticipate the problems,” he said.
