Trump prohibits transgender individuals from serving in the US military

US President Donald Trump has decided not to allow transsexuals to serve in the country’s armed forces, without specifying when that banning will go into effect and reversing the ordered opening in last year by the Government of Barack Obama.

Trump has made the announcement through his personal Twitter account, where he explained that, having consulted with his “generals and military experts”, his Government “will not accept or allow” transgender individuals to “serve in any capacity” in the US Armed Forces.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you”, Trump said in another tweet.

The United States Armed Forces was opened “with immediate effect” to transsexuals in June of 2016 by decision of the government of then President Barack Obama, but the recruitment of transgender people was due to begin next January, after a review process.

Trump has not specified when or how the ban will be applied and how it will affect transsexuals already within the Armed Forces, whose number ranged from a low of just over 1,300 to about 6,600 in 2016 out of a total 1.3 million military personnel, according to a study commissioned by the Pentagon.

Following the opening announced in June 2016, the Obama administration set July 1, 2017 as the date to begin recruiting transsexuals for troops, but the Pentagon announced just hours before, on June 30, a postponement Of six months, until January 2018, to review in this period the plans of adhesion of the transsexuals and the possible impact in the preparation and lethal power of the Armed Forces.

That postponement did not affect the transsexuals who are already serving in the Armed Forces and whose future, for the moment, is uncertain with the decision of Trump (July 27, 2017, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
