Washington /The U.S. president, Donald Trump, signed an executive order to stop the separation of immigrant children from their parents when they are detained on the southern border, something that has generated criticism around the world.

Trump signed a document which will allow children crossing the southern border with their parents to stay with them in immigration detention centres for a long period of time, a source from the White House explained to EFE.

“We didn’t like to see separated families. At the same time, we do not like people entering illegally into our country. This solves the problem, “Trump said in remarks to reporters in the Oval Office.

I did not like to see the separated families or the feelings that this provokes,” said the president, who added that the signing of the decree will lead to “many happy people” in the country.

However, the Trump government plans to maintain the policy of “zero tolerance” against immigration that caused the separation of families.

“We’re keeping families together and this will solve that problem. At the same we are keeping a very powerful border and it continues to be a zero tolerance. We have zero tolerance for people who enter our country illegally”, he said.

That policy, inaugurated in April, requires criminal charges against any adult who crosses the border with Mexico irregularly, which until now caused him to be separated from the children with whom he travelled, which passed into the custody of the federal government.

From now on, parents will be taken with their children to immigration detention centers, which will probably generate lawsuits against the White House because it contravenes an agreement that the US government committed in 1997.

That agreement, known as “Flores Settlement,” establishes that minors detained at the border can only be deprived of their liberty for a maximum of 20 days.

The Executive of former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) breached that agreement when there was a massive arrival of minors from Central America in 2014, which led to a lawsuit that led a federal judge to determine, in 2016, that the 20-year limit days should be respected and applied to both children and their parents.

Trump, who until now had argued that the only one that could end the separation of families was the Congress, said he continues working to achieve a “comprehensive legislation” to address their priorities in migration.

“We will get the wall” with Mexico, guaranteed. (June 20, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
