Washington / US President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will indefinitely maintain a month-old ban on entering the country from Europe due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We want to do it (lift the lock) very quickly, but we want to make sure everything is okay. Right now we have a very strong ban and we are going to keep it that way until they (Europe) heal, ”Trump said during a press conference at the White House.
The closing of borders with Europe began on March 14 for an initial period of 30 days that ended this Sunday.
Trump explained at the press conference that the opening of borders will be done “at the right time”, although he did not want to define if that will happen in weeks or months.
“I would not say that Italy is doing very well right now, I would not say that Spain is doing very well right now, France has just extended its confinement order,” Trump said to justify his decision.
Trump in January banned people from China from entering the United States and in March made the same decision with those arriving from Europe, to which Europe responded with a similar measure.
“Strong measures, but necessary “
“I have decided to take several strong but necessary steps to protect the health and well-being of all Americans. To prevent new cases from entering our borders, we will suspend all travel from Europe to the United States, “Trump said when announcing the veto on March 12.
In the United States, infections are already over 585,000, while in Europe they are around 900,000.
The press conference was marked by controversy following an interview in which Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of Trump’s highest-ranking medical advisers, acknowledged that if the country had been confined earlier, lives would have been saved.
Trump retweeted a message this Monday calling for Fauci to be fired with the hashtag #FireFauci, which had an adverse effect on Twitter with the hashtags #FireTrump (fire Trump) and #FireTrumpNotFauci (fire Trump not Fauci) .
The president defended at the press conference that he was happy with Fauci’s work and said he had retweeted the message asking for his dismissal because he “likes the controversy.” (April 14, 2020, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
