“TURANDOT” VERSION BY BOB WILSON IN MEMORY OF MONTSERRAT CABALLÉ AT ROYAL THEATRE

Madrid / Twenty years after its presentation in the first season of a then reopened Royal Teathre, “Turandot” returns with stage direction by Bob Wilson. The 18 functions which will be offered between November 30 and December 30 will be dedicated to Montserrat Caballé.

“The beauty of Montserrat is that you could always see the little girl who was in her, even doing ‘Salomé'”, recalled at a press conference the American director, who worked with Caballé years ago at the Scala in Milan. “It was one of the greatest moments of my life, my life changed when I met her,” he said.

Wilson has defined this Puccini’s opera as “a strange fairy tale”, which is not part of the real world but with which the viewer can feel identified thanks to three characters who are “in a foreign land” and “greed for the power “that moves them.

But he has refused to go much deeper into his ideas. “The theatre is for the public and the director can suggest but never impose,” said Wilson, who every time he took the floor stood or walked, converting the room of the Royal Theatre that hosted the press conference in his particular stage.

The musical direction of this “Turandot”, co-produced with the Canadian Opera Company, the National Theater of Lithuania and the Houston Grand Opera, is in charge of Nicola Luisotti, associate since 2017 to the Real where he has directed before “Aida” (2018) or “Rigoletto” (2015).

For Luisotti, “Turandot” is an extraordinary opera from many points of view. “The most evident is that it represents Puccini’s transformation from popular to symbolic composer” and the discovery of a new genre he has called “dark opera”.

The musical director has also stressed that Puccini introduces a change in the argument with respect to the version of Carlo Gozzi (1762) on which it is based, the suicide of the character of Liu, and has linked it to the scandal that affected his own life, when her domestic employee committed suicide on suspicion that she had become his mistress.

“Puccini carried that weight for 15 years and the last words of the opera are his apology to the world for a suicide he feels guilty of,” Luisotti explained.

The double cast of the opera is led by the sopranos Irene Theorin and Oksana Dyka as Queen Turandot; Yolanda Auyanet and Miren Urbieta-Vega as Liu, and tenors Gregory Kunde, Robertop Aronica and Jae-Hyoeung Kim in the role of Calaf. (November 22, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
