On Monday, the US Justice Department announced the arrest and imputation in Washington of the alleged Russian agent Mariia Butina, only moments after the public appearance of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin after the summit held in Helsinki.

Both leaders appeared before the media in the Finnish capital after a two-hour historic bilateral meeting between the United States and Russia and included a solo meeting of the two presidents, assisted only by interpreters and a working lunch attended by members of the their respective delegations.

The accusations against spies of Moscow in the investigation of the well-known one like Russian plot that before the encounter presaged a climate of tension between both Government was stopped by the tycoon.

“They told me (the intelligence agencies) that they think it was Russia. I do not see any reason why it could be (…) and President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his refusal of that today, “said the president.

According to the indictment, Mariia Butina was in the country with a student visa, but she really worked for a high Kremlin official without having notified him correctly, for which she is charged with a crime of conspiracy punishable by up to five years in prison.

The alleged spy had established ties with people, politicians and American organizations in the country, including the influential National Rifle Association (NRA), the main lobby for the rights of possession of weapons and one of the most important in politics. of the Republican Party, according to court documents.

The aim of the alleged illegal agent was to favor the interests of the Kremlin through its actions, first in Russian territory and then in the United States, in full electoral preparations.

The imputation of Maria Butina fell like a slab on the refusal of Trump to recognize Russia as the author of the supposed interference in the presidential campaign from which he emerged victorious and joins the other twelve charges of alleged agents of Moscow made before the summit by the special prosecutor of the Russian plot, Robert Mueller, harshly criticized by Trump.

Then, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, of his own party, issued a statement to ratify that: “There is no doubt that Russia interfered in our elections and that it continues with its attempts to undermine democracy here and in all the world. (…) The president must understand that Russia is not our ally.”

The leader of the opposition in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, described as “irresponsible, dangerous and weak” the position that the president has adopted against the intelligence agencies and said:

“Throughout the history of our country, Americans have never seen a president endorse an adversary in the same way that Trump has done with Putin.”

And from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who was its director between 2013 and 2017, John Brennan, described on Twitter today’s performance of the president as “nothing less than a betrayal.”

The US National Intelligence Director, Dan Coats, defended the work of the country’s espionage services and said: “We have been emphatic in our conclusions that Russia won in the 2016 elections and its perverse efforts, which they are still going on, to undermine our democracy. “

In October 2016 and January 2017, the intelligence services published reports in which they pointed out that Putin had ordered to influence the elections through cyber attacks because he felt a “clear” preference for Trump, who was elected against the Democrat Clinton.

In this context,  FBI began its own investigation, which in May 2017 ended up in the hands of the special prosecutor. (July 17, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
