UK opposition leader to support snap election

London / The leader of the United Kingdom’s opposition Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday said he would back a proposal to slate a snap general election in December now that the European Union had granted an extension to the Brexit process.

The change in stance came as Conservative Party Prime Minister Boris Johnson turned to two smaller opposition parties, the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party, in search of an alternative way to pass legislation on an early election after his latest effort on Monday evening failed.

Corbyn’s left-leaning Labour had abstained during Monday’s vote, in which Johnson needed to secure the support of two-thirds of MPs in the House of Commons, the lower chamber of Parliament, as per the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

He only got the backing of 299 lawmakers.

Faced with this blockade, he looked toward the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party, which have both suggested they would back legislation on early elections that would require a simple majority.

The next step would be to agree on a date.

Johnson had suggested 12 December, while the Lib Dems and the SNP have moved in favor of an earlier date.

The PM sees snap elections as a way of boosting his power in Parliament, where he is currently plagued by party rebels and shaky support from the Democratic Unionist Party.

The prospect of UK voters heading back to the polls became even more likely after the European Union granted an extension to the Brexit period, from 31 October to 31 January 2020.

Johnson had repeatedly said he would deliver Brexit by the end of the month but lawmakers passed an amendment forcing him to send a letter to Brussels requesting an extension on 19 October. (October 29, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
