Madrid / Valencia/ The judge who is investigating the operation Erial has today decreed unconditional imprisonment without bail for the expresident of the Generalitat and former minister Eduardo Zaplana, according to legal sources informed to EFE.

Zaplana has passed today at the disposal of the Court of Instruction number 8 in Valencia after being arrested on Tuesday together with six people for alleged crimes of bribery, prevarication, embezzlement and money laundering.

The former Valencian president and former minister was transferred early this afternoon to the judge after the Central Operation Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard completed the searches at their homes and in their office.

The investigation of the so-called Erial case has been directed by the aforementioned Court of Valencia and by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and focuses on “suspicious” adjudications of the Valencian Government at the time of Zaplana (1995-2002) by which a group of businessmen could have paid around ten million euros.

Specifically, the adjudications of the ITV and the wind plan are under suspicion, because the investigators believe that the employers would have paid bids, but are cautious when it comes to attributing to Zaplana the collection of those commissions.

The operation has been triggered by the repatriation of part of that money, which allegedly was hidden in tax havens, so that the connection of these amounts with allegedly criminal activities committed in the Zaplana government stage opens the possibility of lifting the prescription of those crimes.
