Madrid / On Sunday at 03:00, watches in Europe are turned back by one hour, until 02:00. An energy saving valued in Spain at 300 million euros is the main justification to maintain annually the change of time that between children and elderly causes a biological mismatch and that more and more voices question: the light that is not used in the morning is used in the afternoon.

Older people are probably the most affected by the time change from Saturday to Sunday night, according to the Spanish Sleep Society (SES), it can take up to two weeks to adapt your dream to the new schedule. Among children and the elderly the biological clock is less flexible and adapts worse to changes.

The issue has come to Brussels where on October 25 70 MEPs from all parliamentary groups presented in the European Parliament several studies that argue that the accident rate increases by 30% in the week of the hour change, or polls as in Germany, where 74% of citizens are against the change of schedule.

The initiative is based on other citizen proposals registered in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, France and Belgium, where thousands of citizens have been opposed to this time change stipulated in European legislation and the impetus of civil society associations such as the National Commission on Rational Time Schedules, Vereniging tegen het Zomeruur, or Greenpace.

“Since we have a current directive that regulates the time issue, the best way to resolve it is to amend the EU directive, not with a unilateral decision of a Member State,” explained the MEP of the European People’s Party (EPP) group, Czech Pavel Svoboda.

The first general change of time in Europe occurred during World War I at the initiative of Germany, in order to save the coal used for artificial lighting and to be able to destine it to the war effort, a proposal that the USA imitated and imposed in the Second World War with the same objective.

The oil crisis of 1973 led to the recovery of this measure and to set the so-called summer time, which currently applies around 70 countries worldwide, especially the industrialized. (October 28, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
