Venice suffers worst flooding since 1966

Rome/ The Italian city of Venice has experienced its worst flooding since 1966 amid an exceptionally high tide.

The phenomenon, known in the popular tourist destination as high waters (“acqua alta”), saw parts of the city covered by 187 centimeters (73.6 inches) of seawater late Tuesday.

“It will be a long night,” Venice mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, said in a tweet. “The high water is starting to go down. The fear of a few hours ago now gives way for a count of the damages.

“A tide of 187cm is a wound that will leave indelible marks. Now the government must listen.”

The damage wrought by the overnight flooding was plain to see as gondolas and boats were torn from their moorings and three vaporetti — transport boats — had capsized and another was adrift.

The flooding also claimed the life of a 78-year-old man who was electrocuted by a short circuit in his house on the island of Pellestrina, south of Venice.

Authorities were waiting to assess possible damage at St. Mark’s Basilica, the interior of which, including the crypt of the saint, was completely flooded by 110cm of water overnight.

Earlier in the day, 70cm of water flooded the narthex of the basilica, which houses mosaics from the 13th and 11th century as well as columns that were undergoing restoration following the high tide of October 2018.

One of the so-called St. Mark Procurators, Pierpaolo Campostrini, spoke of his concern in the local Il Gazzettino newspaper, highlighting the lack of “defense systems when the water is so high.”

All schools in Venice and its islands will remain closed Wednesday while areas like St. Marks Square remain off-limits to tourists.

Several areas of the canal city have been hit by power cuts and seawater has flooded almost all buildings in the center, including luxury hotels.

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, has called a press conference to request a state of natural disaster in the city.

Venice is braced for high waters throughout the week with another peak of 145cm expected Wednesday morning. (November 12, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
