VENICE UNDER WATER WHICH CAUSES 12 DEATHS IN ITALY AND SOAKS TWO TAPESTRIES BY MIRÒ

Rome / Today, the sun is shining and no it isn’t expected rains in the north of Italy after two days under a heavy storm which has caused 12 deaths and huge destruction in Liguria (northwest) and Veneto (northeast), has flooded Venice, and the basilica of San Marcos for the fifth time in history, and has dug in the Palazzo Zaguri two tapestries by Joan Mirò, valued at half a million euros each.

The northern regions of Italy evaluate the numerous damages caused by the rain and wind storm registered in the area, where in the last 48 hours about 5,800 firefighters have intervened in some 7,000 emergencies due to floods, landslides and fallen trees in the regions from Tuscany, Lazio, Veneto, Lombardia, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Liguria, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

While in Liguria 20,000 people were running out of electricity and the Genoa airport was closed, Portofino was isolated by a landslide and the port of Rapallo destroyed by 200 boats, including a dozen yachts, which crashed against the breakwater of the promenade.

WATER IN THE BAPTISTERY OF THE BASILICA OF SAN MARCOS

Besides, today, the damage caused by the high water in Venice and particularly in the basilica of San Marcos will be evaluated, where the water flooded tens of meters from the marble floor and entered the baptistery and the Zen chapel in which has been the fifth flood of the history of the temple.

In addition there are major damages in the Trentino region due to the overflow of several rivers and about 190 people are isolated in the area of Stelvio Pass, in Bormio (Lombardy), due to the intense snowfall of the last hours, where the fog prevents the rescue tasks.

THE TAPESTRIES BY JOAN MIRÒ

The water has also reached and damped two tapestries by the Spanish artist Joan Mirò, valued of half a million euros each, which were in the Palazzo Zaguri for the exhibition “From Kandisky to Botero, all in a thread”, which opens its doors on November 1.

The two tapestries have been sent to a tapestry in the town of Asti (north-western Italy) to be subjected to the relevant repairs.

On Monday, the tide rose in Venice to 156 centimeters above sea level, the highest since 2008, which generated what is known as “acqua alta”, with the flood of the Plaza de San Marcos and the rest of the streets from the city of the canals.

According to the meteorological service of the Italian Aeronautics, morning is expected “moderate bad weather” with heavy rainfall in Liguria and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and snowfall from 2,000 meters in the Alps. (October 31, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
