VICENT VAN GOGH’S UNPUBLISHED BOOK

The ledger where Vicent Van Gogh draw 65 sketches or unpublished drawings was forgotten for 120 years and yesterday it was presented in Paris despite being disqualified by museum of the artist in Amsterdam.

Vicent van Gogh. Le brouillard d’Arles, carnet retrouvé, with 288 pages, is released tomorrow in France, United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Netherlands, coinciding with Christmas sales campaign.

Publishing house Seuil certifies with its company and two recognised experts that the 65 creation in ink, that is in the book, are by Vincent Van Gogh and these were made between February 1888 and May 1890, two months before his death in France.

Mostly, the drawings are landscapes in Arles, in Saint-Rémy-en-Provence and some portraits, among them one of the author himself and other of Gauguin.

It has preparatory sketches for works as Almond Blossom or Irises, others never saw light or disappeared, or representations of the asylum in Saint-Rémy, in which his hallucinations were treated.

From art historian point of view, Canadian Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, is believed that this book was given as gift to owners of Café de la Gare hotel in Arles, where artist lodged for months.

In fact, Van Gogh, sent it by post and through his doctor four days before leaving Arles.

Record of that package in the annals of the station is added to evidences presented by publishers as warranty.

Controversial for its authenticity

Expert in art of the nineteenth and twentieth century, Frank Baille, ran into its current owners by chance in, a modest family that didn’t want to reveal their identity.

“It cannot be excluded that there isn’t controversy, but its authenticity has been attested by two art undisputed historians (Wels-Ocharov and Ronald Pickvance) after a long research”, publisher of the work, Bernand Comment, said.

In parallel, the same day of the presentation, Van Gogh Museum refused authorship of the Dutch painter.

In both opinions, 2008 and 2012, experts noted this is an imitation on the basis of photographs in high definition in 56 of those 65 drawings.

“They didn’t change of mind” after assuring having analysed some originals in 2013.
