Jakarta / Indonesian authorities arrested two hundred and fifty-seven people in connection with the civil unrest that began on Tuesday in Jakarta after the announcement of the re-election of President Joko Widodo, which left six people killed and more than 200 people injured.
The confrontations between the police and hundreds of followers of the losing presidential candidate, the ex-general Prabowo Subianto, have paralyzed the center of the capital for two days.
Protesters launched fireworks, rocks and other objects last night against riot police, who responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and selective arrests in the center of the capital.
The Jakarta Police spokesman, Prabowo Argo Yuwono, told a press conference that the arrests were carried out for destroying public property and inciting violence. Argo also assured that the disturbances were orchestrated.
The casualties were due to bullet wounds and blunt objects, according to the police, which has denied the use of real ammunition and blamed the agitators for the deaths.
The official number of wounded is 200, although sources of several hospitals indicated to the Antara Indonesian agency that the number exceeds 350, of which many have already been discharged.
On Tuesday, the Indonesian Electoral Commission announced the victory of Widodo with 55.5 percent of the vote, compared with 44.5 percent of its rival, in the elections held on April 17.
