TBO, the comic book that named to the rest of comics, appeared for the first time on March 11, 1917 by a printer from Barcelona, one centenary is commemorated this year with books about its history, exhibitions and conferences dedicated to its characteristics and influence.
Although last TBO, as periodic magazine, was published in 1998, some of its characters or series that marked an era in its pages, such as Melitón Pérez, La familia Ulises, Altamiro de la Cueva, Josechu ‘el Vasco’, the comic strips of Coll or Los grandes inventos del TBO, still remain in the mind of its old readers.
In addition to the acceptance by the Royal Academy of the word ‘tebeo’ to designate any children’s graphic magazine, its great popularity has created phrases such as “ser un invento del TBO”, “siempre van juntos, como la familia Ulises’ or “estar más visto que el TBO”.
The event has led to the publication of the book in Catalan 100 anys: el tebeo que va donar nom als altres (Diminutive Editorial) by the journalist and researcher of the comic Jordi Manzanares, and the next appearance in March of 100 años de TBO (Editions B) of the also journalist and historian of the comic Antoni Guiral.
From 1957, its decadence began by the accumulation of circumstances but, in any case, “the appearance of the television and the 600 (beetle-shaped 600cc car) put an end to the comics”, Jordi Manzanares says.
TBO went through other stages and by other publishers, the most extensive of the hand of Editions B (1988-1998), that recovered the philosophy of the classic TBO, although with modern authors.
The centenary of the TBO will have two exhibitions of reference, the first at Library of Catalonia, from March 16 to April 15, which will be complemented by a conference that will bring together experts and collectors, and the one dedicated to the 35th Salón del Comic in Barcelona, curated by Guiral, from March 30 to April 2.
