WHY ‘CABALLE’ HAD ARTICLE ‘LA’ BEFORE?

The capacity of Montserrat Caballe, who died at the age of 85, to contract the diaphragm and emit a treble in pianissima, as the “wake” of a rocket in the air, made her enter by right of her own in the Olympus of the artists to whom the public knows by its surname with a “la” before.

At a time when “la” Callas (Maria) was 42 years old and “la” Tebaldi (Renata) 43, a 32-year-old woman appeared at the Carnegie Hall that left the critics stunned, so much so that the New York Times published that famous holder of 1965: “Callas + Tebaldi = Caballe”.

That “young woman” of imposing physique, hair and eyes as black as night and wanting to eat the world made clear from then and forever that there was another “divine” to which the public could venerate and “defend” shouting in the theaters in front of other “queens”.

They filled the covers of magazines, the discs were sold by thousands and their faces and their names were so popular that even 50 years later they star in series, films and books.

“La” Caballe was, according to the musicologist Pablo L. Rodríguez, a prodigy capable of combining the dramatic capacity and heartbreaking depth of Maria Callas, “La Divina”, with the exquisiteness and delicacy of Renata Tebaldi, a duo which had to be added to “La Stupenda”, that is, Joan Sutherland, 39 years old in 1965.

In lyric the “fiato” is the ability to dose the air to sing the notes, that is to say, that the greater this ability, the less the artist must breathe while saying the phrase or word.

The legend says that Caballe suffered hardship as a child and that from that time she had the will, much, not to go hungry and that from there came her remarkable body volume, but the fact is that Caballe knew very soon that more “base “In which to rest the diaphragm, more capacity” fiato “.

“Working with her three days was more important for my career than everything I had studied before,” the Sicilian tenor Pietro Picone told EFE today.

Her “stratospheric” capacity has been recorded for the history in the recording she made for “Aida” in 1973, directed by the Italian Riccardo Muti (1941).

For Muti, it’s the best that has ever been done but what is “unheard of”, “an authentic miracle” is the final note, a natural Do, that gives in the aria “Cieli azzurri”, which today they have been issuing the Italian radios as proof what ‘la Caballe’ was from another world.

They recorded that aria without pauses, without cuts, without repetitions, something so “strange” even for the time that the teacher has always highlighted that “milestone” about his work with her, which he has directed in many occasions.

“Cavalleria rusticana” or “I puritani” were some of their best works together but the one she has highlighted above all is the “Norma” they did at the Vienna State Opera in 1977.

Although the Spanish carried a certain reputation as “difficult” and not to bow to the many rehearsals that required certain opera productions, the fact is that Muti has always defended the “very professional” that the singer was, who dedicated nearly 30 days to prepare meticulously with him a paper.

She was “divine” but “not the diva,” Muti said, that is, despite being the owner of a prodigious throat, she didn’t fall into the temptation of believing that her soil began on the roof of others.

This “superhuman” interpreter, of “extraordinary purity” and “great breadth” of repertoire, as published today in the New York Times, was baptized with the nickname of “The Superba” and after her and her colleagues no one else earned enough popularity to be known only by the surname with a “la” before.
