WHY EL CHAPO GUZMAN IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS?

New York / The life of the king of the Sinaloa cartel (Mexico) Joaquin Guzman Loera, alias el Chapo, who sits on the dock in New York yesterday, is accused of drug trafficking, has been a mixture of violence, drugs and eccentric luxuries , where the myth, many times, has been imposed on reality.

“From head to toe he is short in stature, from his head to the sky I calculate his height, because he is great among the greats, to see who has doubts”, in this way the singer Triguillo Palma describes Chapo in one of his dozens of songs (narcocorridos) in which the drug trafficker is praised in northern Mexico.

LIFE IMPRISONMENT

Born on April 4, 1957 in the town of Badiraguato (Sinaloa, northern Mexico) and nicknamed el Chapo for his short stature, the almighty emperor of drugs faces a New York court to life in prison accused of introducing 457 tons of narcotics in the United States, among other crimes related to his activity as head of the Sinaola cartel.

Also known for his eccentric life of luxury, embodied not only in songs, Guzman has been immortalized internationally in the television series produced by Netflix and Univisión, which narrates his rise and fall as a trafficker.

In a controversial interview with American actor Sean Peann and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo in September 2015, months before his arrest, El Chapo defined himself as a nonviolent and happy person with his life.

TWO ESCAPES, TWO ATTACKS, A MYTH

However, the New York Prosecutor’s Office also accuses him of being involved in more than a dozen murders.

In fact, the trial started between strong security measures, in a session focused on the selection of the twelve members of the jury, who will be far from the public’s eyes.

The members of the jury will have to be transferred to the court and to their homes guarded by the police for fear that members of the Chapo will try to kill them.

The two escapes of prisons carried out in Mexico by Guzman, in the Puente Grande prison, on January 19, 2001, and in the El Altiplano prison, on July 11, 2015, as well as the two occasions on which he emerged unscathed, two attacks, contributed to nourish its myth, propagated by the narcocorridos, a Mexican musical subgenre where the “exploits” of drug lords are narrated.

“If you already know that I have hair (I escape), I do not know why I am locked up, I suffer from claustrophobia,” the Cachorro Delgado sang in 2015 after his escape from the El Altiplano prison.

However, no song has done so much to turn the Chapo into a global phenomenon as the homonymous series “El Chapo”, which started in 2017 and concluded in 2018 after three seasons.

A LIFE FOR DRUGS

El Chapo grew up in a poor family in a ranch in Badiraguato, known as La Tuna, where at the age of 15 he began to grow and sell marijuana and opium.

“The only way to have money to buy food and survive was to grow opium and marijuana, and at that age I began to grow and sell it,” Chapo said in his interview with Sean Peann.

But the criminal record for which he is judged would not begin until the eighties, as lieutenant and confidant of Miguel Angel Felix-Gallardo, the Godfather, founder of the first cartel of Guadalajara (Mexico).

Then, without much study but endowed with an undoubted natural intelligence, El Chapo designed a strategy to transport cocaine and marijuana from Colombia to the US in airplanes, which made the trip back to Mexico loaded with dollars.

In the decade of the nineties, after the arrest in 1989 of Felix-Gallardo, the Chapo decided to go free and create the Sinaloa cartel, which fought against its rivals to take control of drug trafficking in Guadalajara and that since the beginning of the ninety transported the drug between the US and Mexico through tunnels.

The power and money monopolized by the Mexican emperor of drugs led the magazine “Time” to place him in 2009 among the 100 most influential people on the planet, and the publication “Forbes” to include it from 2012 in the list of people richest in the world.

Today, he sits on the bench in the US, where he was extradited in January 2017, more than a year after his arrest in Mexico, and where he is considered to be the world’s biggest trafficker and public enemy number one from the death of Bin Laden in 2011. (November 6, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
